Matrix visualization: review, application and perspective

Abstract
A matrix visualization (MV), also known as a heatmap, presents data matrices by colored maps. This tool can be used to investigate the grouping and clustering structure of large-scale, high-dimensional datasets without reducing their dimensions. This tool has been extensively used in a variety of fields, including bioinformatics, social science, and computer science, while serving as an exploratory data analysis (EDA) tool. This study first reviews some representative works on MV-related techniques and software development. Afterward, we describe in more detail the main procedures of MV within the framework of generalized association plots (GAPs), along with some recent advances. Specifically, raw data from cellular probes will be introduced and applied. Additionally, we discuss MV generalizations in the context of visual data mining, as well as some innovative approaches for possible future research.
